Slumdog Bullshit

A little late to be talking about this now, but I might as well get it off my chest before the Oscar ceremony. You may have heard of a little movie titled Slumdog Millionaire, Slumdog has been getting much well-deserved positive buzz from critics but my beef is with how the film was released and how only people will watch movies once they get the nomination.

If you have seen the film and are curious, you will notice the film starts with a Warner Bros. logo. That is because the film was originally to be distributed by Warner but apparently they had such little faith in the film they sold it to Fox Searchlight (read more about it here http://www.chud.com/articles/articles/17728/1/THE-DEVIN039S-ADVOCATE-NOBODY-KNOWS-ANYTHING---THE-SLUMDOG-STORY/Page1.html). Instead of giving the film the wide release it deserved Warners and Fox handled the film like something toxic, not believing an audience push would be enough for the film, and maybe they were right.

Noboby gave a damn about the film, and it wasn't until Slumdog won the Golden Globes that people finally started getting interested. Slumdog is a truly great film and it is a shame that people need the superficial push of some shiny awards to get their asses in the seats. Now the film has to deal with the unneccesary hype, much higher expectations and those paticular people who think they're awesome for not liking the movie that everybody else liked. It feels as if no one really is enjoying the film for themselves, they only like it because they are being told to like it, the mass audience was not given the chance to discover the film for themselves. Maybe that's just the way it always is and that's just bullshit.
